Why Every Cyclist Should Ride to the Cape of Good Hope at Least Once

A Journey Through the Cape Peninsula

The ride begins as you leave the city behind and enter the Cape Peninsula, one of the most scenic stretches of coastline in the world.

As the road winds south, the scenery changes constantly. Towering mountains rise from the ocean, white sand beaches give way to rugged cliffs, and the scent of fynbos fills the air.

But this coastline is not only defined by natural beauty—it is also steeped in maritime history. For centuries, Portuguese and Dutch explorers navigated these waters during the Age of Discovery, charting routes between Europe and the East. The Cape became a critical waypoint on global trade routes, but also a place feared by sailors.

The waters surrounding the peninsula are notorious for their shipwrecks. Over the centuries, hundreds of vessels have been lost along this stretch of coastline, claimed by sudden storms, powerful currents, and the infamous “Cape of Storms” conditions. Even today, as you ride along the cliffs, it is easy to imagine the isolation and danger early sailors must have felt as they rounded this rugged headland.

Once inside the Cape of Good Hope reserve, traffic begins to thin out and the landscape becomes increasingly wild. It’s not unusual to ride for kilometres surrounded by untouched natural beauty, with only the sound of wind, ocean and birds for company.

Wildlife You Won’t Find on Most Bike Rides

One of the things that makes this ride so unique is the wildlife.

Depending on the season and the route, you may encounter:

  • Baboons

  • Ostriches

  • Bontebok

  • Eland

  • Tortoises

  • Dassies (rock hyrax)

If your route includes Simon’s Town, you’ll also have the opportunity to stop at Boulders Beach, home to the world-famous colony of African penguins.

Very few cycling routes anywhere in the world combine such incredible scenery with such abundant wildlife, all within a protected reserve that forms part of the Cape Floral Region.

The Climb That Everyone Remembers

Reaching the Cape of Good Hope isn’t simply a case of riding to the end of the road.

The final kilometres include several memorable climbs that reward riders with breathtaking views across the Atlantic Ocean and False Bay. These ascents feel even more meaningful when you consider the centuries of maritime history that unfolded just offshore—where Portuguese caravels and Dutch East India Company ships once tested these same waters in search of safe passage to the East.

They’re challenging enough to feel like an achievement, but manageable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.

And when you reach the famous Cape of Good Hope sign, there’s always time for the obligatory photo.

More Than Just a Landmark

Although many visitors come for the iconic sign, the real magic lies beyond it.

The winding roads through the reserve offer some of the quietest and most enjoyable cycling in the Cape Peninsula. One of the most memorable sections is the glorious descent towards the misty cliffs below. As you roll downhill, the landscape opens dramatically—sheer rock faces drop into the ocean, sea spray rises from the surf, and the horizon seems to stretch endlessly into the Atlantic.

On clear days, you can see dramatic cliffs dropping into the ocean, with waves crashing far below. It’s the kind of landscape that encourages you to stop, take a breath and simply appreciate where you are.

This entire region is also part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, the smallest yet richest floral kingdom on Earth. Despite its size, it contains thousands of plant species found nowhere else, many of them part of the unique fynbos biome. Cycling through it feels like passing through a living botanical museum—one that has evolved in isolation for millions of years and continues to thrive in the harsh coastal winds and nutrient-poor soils.

Ride at Your Own Pace

One of the greatest advantages of exploring the Cape Peninsula by bike is the freedom it offers.

Unlike travelling by car, cycling allows you to experience every part of the journey.

Pause for photographs whenever you like, stop for coffee in Kalk Bay or Simon’s Town, enjoy lunch overlooking the ocean, or simply take in the sounds of nature as you ride through the reserve.

Every tour can be tailored to suit your pace, whether you’re an experienced cyclist looking for a challenging day in the saddle or someone who simply wants to enjoy one of the world’s great scenic rides.

Why Ride with a Local Guide?

The Cape Peninsula is full of hidden gems that many visitors drive straight past.

A local guide can help you experience much more than the famous viewpoints.

You’ll discover quieter roads, learn about the history of early Portuguese and Dutch navigation around the Cape, understand the unique fynbos ecosystem of the Cape Floristic Kingdom, and hear stories of the many shipwrecks that line this dramatic coastline. You’ll also know the best places to stop for coffee, photographs and local food.

Most importantly, your guide takes care of the navigation and logistics, allowing you to focus entirely on enjoying the ride.

When Is the Best Time to Ride?

The Cape of Good Hope can be enjoyed throughout the year, but spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) often provide the most comfortable riding conditions.

Summer offers long days and spectacular light, summer may come with hot weather and strong wind. Best to cooordinate with your guide according to the weather. While winter rewards riders with lush green landscapes and fewer visitors.

Whatever the season, it’s always worth checking the weather forecast, as wind can play a big role on the peninsula.

An Experience You’ll Never Forget

There are plenty of beautiful places to ride a bicycle.

But very few combine dramatic coastlines, unique wildlife, world-class roads, rich maritime history, ancient shipwreck-laden waters, and one of the most extraordinary floral kingdoms on Earth quite like the Cape of Good Hope.

Whether you’re visiting Cape Town for the first time or returning for another adventure, this is one ride that deserves a place on every cyclist’s bucket list.
