Packing for a Cycling Holiday in Cape Town

Planning a cycling holiday in Cape Town? You’re in for an unforgettable experience. From the iconic climbs of Chapman’s Peak Drive to the quiet vineyard roads of Constantia and the spectacular ride through the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, Cape Town offers some of the best road cycling in the world.

One of the questions we’re asked most often at Kaap Tours is, “What should I bring?” The good news is that you don’t need to overpack. With the right cycling kit and a few travel essentials, you’ll be ready to enjoy everything the Mother City has to offer.

Here’s our complete packing guide to help you prepare.

1. Your Cycling Kit

Bring the cycling clothing you’re most comfortable riding in. Generally we have lovely weather to cycle in and a bib and shortsleeve is enough. However the weather can change quickly and the wind can be cold since it is coming off the atlantic, always carry a windbreaker on longer rides.

We recommend packing:

  • Cycling jerseys
  • Bib shorts
  • Cycling socks
  • Gloves (winter gloves as well between May – September)
  • Helmet
  • Sunglasses
  • Lightweight base layer
  • Handlebar bag (optional but very convenient)
  • Duvet cycling jacket if visiting in winter (may-sept) or doing a multi day trip with high mountains
  • Rain coat & leg warmers (if visiting outside of summer months)

If you’re riding for several days, having two or three sets of cycling clothing makes life much easier.

2. Don’t Forget a Windproof Jacket

Cape Town’s weather can change quickly.

A calm morning can turn into a windy afternoon, particularly if you’re riding along Chapman’s Peak Drive or through the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve.

A lightweight windproof jacket takes up very little room but can make a huge difference to your comfort.

3. Sun Protection is Essential

Even during winter, the South African sun is surprisingly strong.

Don’t forget:

  • Sunscreen (SPF 30+ or higher, preferably SPF in our summer months)
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Sunglasses
  • Cycling cap (optional)

Reapply sunscreen during longer rides, especially if you’re spending the day exploring the Cape Peninsula.

4. Should You Bring Your Own Bike?

Many cyclists automatically assume they should travel with their own bike, but it’s worth considering the alternatives.

Travelling with a bike can involve airline fees, oversized luggage, the risk of damage in transit and the time needed to reassemble everything once you arrive.

At Kaap Tours, we offer premium road bikes that are professionally maintained and ready to ride. For many visitors, hiring a high-quality bike allows them to travel lighter and spend less time worrying about logistics.

If you do decide to bring your own bike, don’t forget:

  • Helmet
  • Shoes
  • Pedals (if required)
  • GPS computer
  • Chargers
  • Spare derailleur hanger
  • Basic spares

5. Shoes and Pedals

Your cycling shoes are one of the most important items you’ll pack.

If you’re hiring one of our bikes, simply let us know which pedal system you use before your tour and we’ll have everything set up and ready for your arrival.

6. Hydration and Nutrition

Cape Town’s climbs can be demanding, especially during the warmer months.

Bring:

  • Water bottles
  • Electrolyte tablets
  • Your favourite energy bars or gels if you have a preferred brand
  • There are plenty of shops selling cycling nutrition so don’t stress if you don’t have space for extra nutrition

We’ll always plan opportunities to refill bottles and stop for coffee or refreshments along the route.

7. Comfortable Clothes for After the Ride

Some of the best moments of a cycling holiday happen once you’ve stepped off the bike.

Whether you’re enjoying fresh seafood in Kalk Bay Harbour, exploring the V&A Waterfront or relaxing at a wine estate in Constantia, it’s worth packing:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Casual clothing
  • A light jacket for cooler evenings
  • Swimwear if you’re tempted by one of Cape Town’s beautiful beaches

8. Electronics

Don’t leave home without:

  • GPS cycling computer
  • Heart rate monitor (if you use one)
  • Phone charger
  • Camera
  • Power bank

You’ll want plenty of photos from rides through the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, Chapman’s Peak Drive and the breathtaking coastline of the Cape Peninsula.

9. Travel Essentials

Before you leave, double-check you have:

  • Passport
  • Travel insurance
  • Flight details
  • Driver’s licence (if hiring a car)
  • Bank cards

It’s also worth saving offline maps and important travel documents on your phone.
